JOHN ALTOM
Companies C & A 7th Tn. Cal.
Taken from Company Descriptive Book: John was described as 5ft. 7in. tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He was born in Henderson, TN. and his occupation was a farmer. John enlisted Aug 4, 1862 at Lexington, by Capt. Smith, for a term of 3 years. He was transferred to Company A per regimental orders April 26, 1865 at Paducah, KY. , and mustered out at Nashville, TN. on the 9th of August, 1865 at the age of 21 years.
N. R. ALTUM
Co. H 2nd (Asby's) Tn. Cal.
N.R.(Newton Russell) enlisted Aug. 1, 1861 in the Confederate Army at Knoxville, TN. by Jas. W. Gillespie,for 12 months. He was present on Company Muster Rolls for May and June of 1862;July & August 1862; Dec31, 1862; March 13, 1864. The Nov & Dec 1864 muster roll says Absent Without Leave since 11/8/1864...He married Elizabeth Irene Watson of Tunnell Hill, GA. about this time. They went to TX. very soon after the 1870 census and their 3rd child, born 1872, was born in TX.* * (To view photo of N.R. Altum at a Veteran Reunion about 1904 click HERE)
DAVID C. ALTOM
Company C 24th Ar. Inf.
David C. Altom enlisted June 16, 1862 in Falcon, AR. for a period of 3 years in Company C, also known as Dawson's Regt. He was listed on the muster rolls for July and Aug. of 1863, while stationed near Little Rock.
ELIHU ALTOM
Company E 11th Ar. Inf.
Elihu was listed on the company register at Camp Douglas, Illinois as deceased on July 3, 1862. On a separate register listing claims of deceased, it stated: By Whom Presented: Julia A. Altum, Widow. Filed 1/4/1865.
WILLIAM A. ALTOM
Company E 11th Ar. Inf.
William A. Altom enlisted in June of 1862 in Benton, AR. for a period of 1 year in the "Falcon Guards", to become known as Co. E. 11th. He was captured 4/8/1862 just two months shy of his discharge at *Island #10 and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois where he was listed on the Roll of Prisoners of War September 1, 1862.
NOTE: William A. was a prisoner of war along with his brother Elihu. William A. survived his time spent as a POW, although his brother lost his life there.
* Island #10 was a southern fort on the Mississippi above Memphis, near New Madrid.
